A List of My Most Recent Sins

If I were Catholic my visit to the confessional this week would probably sound like this:

Forgive me father for…

  1. I’ve been critical, rude and irritable lately
  2. I haven’t been focused on my wife the way I should be
  3. I have been eating tons of fast food
  4. I haven’t been going to the gym
  5. I haven’t read anything for two weeks, not even my Bible
  6. I’ve been praying, but it feels like I’m hitting a ceiling, so I’m thinking of giving up.

I’ve been stuck in a hazy malaise these last few days (but it still hasn’t killed my mad rhyming ways, word).  It’s been about three weeks.  As I look at the list above I’m beginning to see why.

M. Scott Peck once said, “Discipline is the set of tools we require to solve life’s struggles.”  I’ve had no discipline.  No wonder I’ve been struggling.

It all happened subtly you know, one thing at a time.  I just stopped doing the stuff I know I’m supposed to do.  Making that list up there really helped though.  I should probably add another thing so it comes out to seven.  That’s a more godly number.  But it is interesting that there are six things I haven’t been doing…  Now I’m rambling.  Off to work.

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (1 Cor.9:27)

You failed to mention that you’ve been immersed in the refurbishing of a new home. I’m no priest, but I feel fully empowered to offer absolution. Sometimes the seasons of life mean you need to cut yourself a break. 😉

Ha! Thanks Julie. But that’s all the more reason I need to get more disciplined.
